Why Can’t I Transfer My Avios? A BA, Iberia and Qatar Checklist

Quick answer

An Avios transfer can fail because the accounts do not validate as belonging to the same person, the selected route is unsupported or an eligibility restriction applies. Check the exact transfer service, account details and transaction status before retrying. Moving Avios between programs does not automatically protect them from expiry.

Compare Avios funding options

First identify which kind of transfer failed

Three different transactions often get called an Avios transfer: moving your own Avios between supported airline programs, converting a bank’s points into Avios, and transferring Avios to another person. They have different rules. A successful bank transfer does not prove that Combine My Avios is available to a newly opened airline account.

Write down the sending account, receiving account, exact service used and whether anything has been deducted. If the sending balance has fallen, treat it as a missing transaction rather than a failed button press. Do not submit another transfer simply because the destination page has not refreshed.

Check the same-person requirement carefully

British Airways’ Combine My Avios conditions require accounts registered to the same individual, accurate details and valid date-of-birth and email information. A legal name change can require proof before linking succeeds.

Compare the profiles yourself. If a field is incorrect, use the airline’s correction process. Do not invent a birth date, change someone else’s account to your name or send credentials to a person offering to 'unlock' the transfer. Correcting genuine details is different from misrepresenting ownership.

The Iberia 90-day rule is not every transfer rule

BA’s published conditions say Combine My Avios cannot transfer to or from Iberia Club within 90 days of joining Iberia Club. Apply that rule to that service. Do not assume it describes every bank-to-Iberia conversion or every paid transfer product.

Before funding a new account, check the destination program and your bank’s current eligibility separately. If your intended flight is soon, a new account may not fit the timetable. Buying points in another program without confirming a working path can leave you with a second unusable balance.

Use a supported BA–Qatar connection

BA’s official Avios-transfer page directs members to supported routes, including Qatar Airways. Start from the airline’s own account area, follow its linking instructions and verify both balances after completion.

Sharing a currency does not mean that every pair of Avios programs has a direct transfer button. Do not substitute an unofficial transfer service or assume a household total is a freely movable personal balance. Once the Avios reach the destination, that program’s award pricing and rules govern the booking.

Do not confuse a transfer with expiry protection

BA explicitly states that Combine My Avios is not earning or redeeming activity and does not prevent expiry. Moving a balance out and back is therefore not a reliable expiry strategy. Check each account’s actual expiry information and qualifying-activity rules.

Iberia’s Avios FAQ also distinguishes qualifying activity from transfers. Resolve a looming expiry issue with the program directly rather than relying on a transfer screen or a generic tip from an older article.

Escalate with a useful record

After the transfer is resolved, check the award again. A completed transfer does not hold the flight at its old price. Our Avios buying guide explains the cost comparison; transfer timing covers planning around uncertain posting times.

  • Name the transfer service and both loyalty programs.
  • Provide the amount, date, time zone and transaction reference through official support.
  • Describe whether the sending balance changed and whether a receipt was issued.
  • Attach an error screenshot with private information redacted where appropriate.
  • Ask for a trace or eligibility explanation before repeating a deducted transaction.

Resolve account eligibility first. A new purchase cannot fix a blocked or ineligible transfer route.

Frequently asked questions

Does moving Avios reset their expiry?

Not through Combine My Avios. BA’s conditions state that these movements do not count as earning or redeeming and do not prevent expiry.

Can I transfer Avios from a new Iberia account?

Combine My Avios has a 90-day joining restriction for Iberia Club. Check the particular service: bank conversions and other products have their own requirements.

Should I repeat a transfer when Avios have disappeared?

First check both histories and contact the provider with the reference. A deduction without a matching credit needs tracing, not an immediate duplicate request.
