How Far Is My Flight? Distance in Miles, Km and Flight Time (2026)

Quick answer

The fastest way to find how far your flight is: type the two airports into a flight distance calculator. Flight distance is measured as the great-circle path — the shortest route over the Earth's surface. New York JFK to London Heathrow, for example, is 3,442 miles (5,540 km), roughly a 7-hour flight.

Flight distance is the great-circle path—the number award charts, jet lag, and flight time all start from.

Whether you're estimating jet lag, comparing routings, or working out an award chart band, the first number you need is the flight's distance. Our free flight distance calculator covers 8,800+ IATA airports and returns the distance in statute miles, kilometres and nautical miles, plus an estimated nonstop flight time — and because it runs on MileMarketplace, it also shows what the route costs in award miles.

How is flight distance calculated?

Flight distance is the great-circle distance: the shortest path between two points over the Earth's curved surface, computed with the haversine formula on the Earth's mean radius of 6,371 km. It's the standard reference distance in aviation — award charts, mileage-earning tables and flight planning all start from it.

Real flown routes are usually 1–5% longer than the great-circle figure, because aircraft follow airways and organized ocean tracks, route around weather and restricted airspace, and chase or avoid jet streams. That's also why eastbound transatlantic crossings are often an hour faster than the westbound return.

Distances below are great-circle figures computed from the public-domain OurAirports coordinates — the same numbers our calculator returns:

Why does flight distance matter for award miles?

Several major programs price award tickets directly off distance bands — British Airways and Iberia (Avios), Cathay Asia Miles and Air Canada Aeroplan among them. Know the distance and you know the band; know the band and you know how many miles you need for business class. As a working estimate across typical partner charts, a one-way award runs roughly:

How to check your flight's distance

  • Open the flight distance calculator.
  • Type the origin and destination — IATA code (JFK) or city name both work.
  • Read the distance in statute miles, kilometres and nautical miles, plus the estimated nonstop time.
  • Check the per-cabin award-miles estimate and what those miles cost at our current cheapest live rate.
  • Ready to fly it? Browse live miles listings or have our team book the exact flight for you.

Before you rely on these numbers

Award-miles figures are one-way estimates across typical partner charts; individual programs vary, and airline taxes and fees are never included in miles prices.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between statute miles and nautical miles?

A statute mile is 1.609 km — the mile award charts use. A nautical mile is 1.852 km, the unit pilots and flight plans use. Our calculator shows both, plus kilometres.

Is the real flown distance the same as the calculated distance?

Usually 1–5% longer. Aircraft follow airways and organized tracks and route around weather, so the great-circle figure is a reference — and it's what award charts are built on.

How accurate is the estimated flight time?

It assumes a typical ~875 km/h effective cruise plus 45 minutes of taxi, climb and descent. Winds and routing move real block times by up to an hour or more on long hauls.

How many miles do I need for my flight?

Distance decides it for chart-based programs: roughly 25k one-way in economy or 55k in business at transatlantic range. The calculator estimates all three cabins for your exact route.
